Westermo WeOS - Media Redundancy Protocol.

The Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP) is a protocol designed to handle redundancy in switched ring layer-2 topologies.

When mixing different vendor hardware in industrial layer 2 switched networks there is always the problem of compatibility between redundancy protocols.
Many switch manufacturers have their own ring protocol solutions which are not usable in mixed environments.
There is a common protocol used by many vendors, Rapid Spanning Tree.
However this is not an industrial protocol and it has its limitations to the network structure and fail-over timings so it is not really an ideal option.

In WeOS 4.22.0 (and newer) Westermo now supports the Media Redundancy Protocol MRP.
This is an industrial protocol with a long and proven track record in harsh environments.
The fact that it is an open standard enables compatibility between vendors as well as providing the correct characteristics for industrial grade networks, fast fail-over, large installations and reliability.

This is an open standard ring topology protocol as specified by IEC 62439-2. Westermo switches can now be used not only to build MRP rings in new installations but also for extending or replacing devices in existing ring networks.
